Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His child, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President President Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the period, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
