In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
